Dachigam National Park

 

Dachigam National Park, literally stands for "ten villages" with covering an area of 141  sq. kms. is located 22 away from the Srinagar.

The park could be in the memory of ten villages that were reallocated for the formation of the Park. From the year 1910, the park is in protected area first under the maharaja of Jammu & Kashmir and later under the concerned government authorities. The park was initially created for the supply of the clean drinking water to the Srinagar city and later on was declared as the Nationa Park in the year 1981.

The park is situated in the Zabarwan Range of western Himalayas with the variation in the altitude ranging from the 5500 ft to 14000 ft. The park is divide in the two sections :

  • Upper Dachigam : good for day trek's.
  • Lower Dachigam : comprises of one-third of total area and the area is accessible by visitor the most.

 

Flora & Fauna

  • Hangul and Kashmir stag are the animal species for which the park is famous for.
  • Some other species are : Jungle Cat, Leopard, Hill Fox, Musk Deer, Otter, Jackal, Himalayan Black Bear, Himalayan Brown Bear and many more.
  • Some species of Birds are : Redstart, Woodpecker, Babbler, Black Bulbul, Titmouse, Wallcreeper and many more.
  • Mountainslides under the tress are wooded and the forest consist of broad leafs species like alpine pastures, meadows, waterfalls and scrub vegetation with deep gullies, known as Nars.

Climate

  • In Summer months temperature ranges from 14°C to 8°C.
  • In Winter months  temperature ranges from 4°C to -2°C.

Best Time to Visit

May to November is the best time to visit the the Dachigam National Park as november to feburary the area is covered with the snowbound. March to May is ideal for the birds watching.

How to Reach

By Air - Srinagar Airport is the nearest airport and is 32 km away from the park.

By Rail -  Jammu (315 km.) is the most convenient railhead.

By Road - Srinagar is accessible to Dachigam Park which is 21 km away and srinagar is well connected with the National Highway 1A.
