Great Himalayan National Park


In the state of Himachal Pradesh, India there is a national park for visit known as Great Himalayan National Park (GHNP). It is located 50 km from the Kullu. In the year of 1984 the Great Himalayan National Park was established but in the year of 1999 it was declared as a National Park. The national park covers the area of 1171 sq km..  There are 375 fauna species. These fauna includes 31 species of mammals and 181 species of birds etc. There are many types of animals and birds in this national park. Some list of animals are : snow leopard, blue sheep, Himalayan brown bear, Himalayan tahr, musk deer, goral etc. and list of birds are : golden eagles, Himalayan griffon vultures, lammergeyers, raptors etc.  These faunas are protected under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972. Many types of Flora in this park are trees, shrubs, herbs etc.  The park is also famous destination with trekkers. The altitude of this place is 1700 m above the sea level.

In the year 2014, the park was added to UNESCO list World Heritage Sites. The committe granted the status to the park under "Outstanding Significance of Biodiversity Conservation".

Timeline of Creation

From the inception to the inauguration for Great Himalayan National Park to be included in Indian National Park System took 20 years. The brief timeline is under :

  • 1980-1983 : Preliminary park survey.
  • 1984 : Notification by state of Himachal Pradesh to create Great Himalayan National Park.
  • 1987 : First management planned.
  • 1988 : Settlement Proceedings
  • 1992 : The Himachal Wildlife Project reviewed the existing management plan.
  • 1994 : Revised of Notification fro creating the Great Himalayan National Park by the government of HP.
  • 1994-1999 :  Research to assist in the management of the park was done by  Conservation of Biodiversity Project (CoB),Dehradun.
  • 1999 : Project completed on December,1999 and Great Himalayan National Park becomes latest and newest national park of India.
  • 2014 : The park was listed in the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit in Great Himalayan National Park is  April-June and September-October.


In Summer: There are Sunny days in summer but nights are cool.

In Winter : The Temperature is very low and cool.

The entry fees for The Great Himalayan National Park is given below. Entry fees for Indians, the entry fees for foreigners are different and  camera fees and other charges included if applicable.
