Hampi

History

Hampi is derived from the word Pampa which is the old name of the Tungabhadra River. The name "Hampi" is an anglicized version of the Kannada name derived from Pampa.  Hampi is also known as Pampa-kshetra, Kishkindha-kshetra or Bhaskara-kshetra. Hampi was one of the best areas of the capital of the Vijayanagara Empire from 1343 to 1565. By seven lines of fortifications Vijayanagara was encompassed. These fortifications had large number of  gateways. Hampi is generally a safe, peaceful place, but don’t wander around the ruins after dark or alone, as it can be dangerous terrain to get lost in, especially at night.
