Jaldapara National Park

Jaldapara National Park is situated at the foothills of Eastern Himalayas on the banks of Toras rivers in the West Bengal state at an altitude of 61 m and covering an area about 216.51 sq km of vast grassland with patches of riverine forests. Now it has the largest population of the one horned Indian Rhinoceros, an animal threatened with extinction in the state and is Habitat Mangement Area.


In the early 18 Century the place was as " Totapar " , as the Toto tribes and Mech Tribes used to stay in this area.  In the year 1941, the park was declared as the sanctuary for protecting the great variety of flora and fauna. The park was declared as the National Park in May 2012.


Flora & Fauna

  • One horned Indian rhinoceros are the main attraction in the park.
  • Largest rhino population is hold by the park after Kaziranga National park.
  • The park is covered with the tall elephant grasses.
  • It is one of the very few places in India, where the Bengal Florican is sighted.
  • Some of the another animals are :Indian Leopard, Indian Elephant, Sambar, Bison, Barking Deer, Spotted Deer, Hog Deer.
  • Some other birds are : Peafowl, Shikra, Pythons, Jungle Fowl, Cobras, Crested Eagle.

Other Attraction

  • Chilapata Forest :  located in Dooars, West Bengal have lured animal lovers from round the world. Rich in wildlife and moulded by thick tall and short trees and bushes, the forest gives a chance to spot many new species.
  • Totapara Village : located on the banks of river torsa having an old house tribes known as Tota Tribe.


  • Temperature ranges from 32°C to 40°C in Summer.
  • Temperature ranges from 12°C to 27°C in Winter.

  • September to May is the best time to visit the Jaldapara National Park.

By Rail - Nearest railway station is located 7 km away from the park at Madarihat.

By Road - Jaldapara Park is connected to all the major cities through National Highway 317.
