Kangra Devi Temple


Kangra Devi Temple is an ancient temple situated in Kangra district in the state of Himachal Pradesh. The temple is dedicated to goddess Brajeshwari Devi or Vajeshwari Devi. The temple is also known as Mata Brajeshwari Devi Temple. Various invandors from the north raided this temple. The temple was completely destroyed in the year 1905 due to earthquake and was rebuilt in 1920. Goddess Brajeshwari is present in the form of Pindi. The present structure has three tombs in it, which is unique in itself. At the doorway of the temple there are two janitors holding staff in their hands. The marvelously carved pillars depict images of  gods and goddesses of the Hindu Pantheon.


According to mythology when the Goddess Sati sacrifice herself in honor of Lord Shiva in her Father Yagya. Lord Shiva took her body and started the tandav. To stop Lord Shiva from destroying the world Lord Vishnu Divided the body of Sati into 51 Parts with his chakra. The left breast was fell at this spot, thus making the Temple at this spot as Shakti Peeth. The orignally temple was built by the Pandava as the Goddess Durga came into their dream and told them that she is situated in kangra district and if they want them self to be secure they should make a temple for her in that area otherwise they will be destroyed.
