Kangra Fort

Kangra Fort is an ancient fort situated in Kangra district in the state of Himachal Pradesh. The fort is also known by Nagar Kot Fort. The entry to the fort is through the courtyard enclosed between the two small gates which was built during the sikh period. After the entrance there is long and a narrow passage leads to top of the fort through the Ahani and Amiri Darwaza. About 500 feet from the gate there is a sharp angle turn which passes through the Jehangiri Darwaza. The Darshani Darwaza which is inflanked with the statues of River Goddesses Ganga and Yamuna gave access to a courtyard, along the south side of which stood the shrines Lakshmi-Narayana Sitala and Ambika Devi.

Kangra Fort was built by the Royal family of kangra district, which has its its origins to the ancient Trigarta Kingdom, mentioned in the Mahabharata epic. It is the largest fort in the Himalayas and the oldest dated fort in India. The fort of Kangra resisted Akbar's siege in 1615. However, Akbar's son Jehangir successfully subdued the fort in 1620. Kangra was ruled by the Raja Hari Chand Katoch of Kangra, Mughal emperor Jahagir with the help of Suraj Mal. In 1789, Raja Sansar Chand succeeded in recovering the ancient fort. The fort remained with the Katochs untill 1828 when Ranjit Singh annexed it after Sansar Chand's death. The fort was finally taken by the British after the Sikh war of 1846. The British ruled the fort untill it get heavenly damaged in the earthquake.
