Maitri Bagh - A Zoo and a Park

Maitri Bagh is a Zoo as well as a Park which is located in Chhattisgarh, India. It is spreaded over an area of about 167 acres. Maitri means Friendship and Bagh Means Garden which literally means “Friendship Garden” that’s why it is also known Garden of Friendship. The zoo has about 39 exotic species of animals, birds and reptiles including many endangered species. The zoo cum park offers various attractions and it is one of the famous picnic spots in the state. There are beautiful lakes and gardens and the musical fountains in the garden is a feast to eyes. It is the biggest zoo in Chhattisgarh. If you are found of white tigers and musical fountain then this is the place. Lush green gardens different species of animals, waterfall, swings for children everything is present here. You can spend one complete day with your friends and family here.

Maitri Bagh was established by Bhilai Steel Plant. This is a result of cooperation between Indian and Russian governments. At the entrance gate of Maitri Bagh you will found two artificial giraffes, colliding heads with each other. Inside this park you will found number of gardens, a lake, a manmade waterfall, a musical fountain and a toy train known as Maitri Express, which is operated on a daily basis.

The toy train runs between 3:00 pm and 6:00 pm and the price of the ticket is easily affordable. However, children below three years can enjoy a free ride in this toy train. The musical fountain show in the evening is worth watching as it is one of the main attractions in this park for the visitors.
Almost all wild animal like white tiger, normal tiger, lion, leopard, panther, bear etc. along with other animals like dear, fox , monkeys can be seen here along with variety of birds & snakes.

One Pragati minar is also available there from where you can see the outlook of Maitri Bagh Park and Bhilai steel plant. The Pragati Minar is open from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm.


The zoo is open from 10 am to 5 pm, but you can enjoy the park till 7:30 pm. The musical fountain operates at 7 pm on Saturday and Sunday. It is having a nominal amount of entry fee. The zoo and park remains closed on Mondays.

How to Reach

You can easily reach to this place by air, by train and by road. The nearest airport is Raipur airport and the nearest railway station is Bhilai Power House. Tourists can either take local buses from various points within the city to reach this place.

It is a must visit place if you want to spend good time with family and friends. In short, rest assure that a trip to Maitri Bagh will leave you with a lifetime of fond memories.
