Mussoorie

In the Dehradhun district of Uttrakhand, Mussoorie is the best and impressive hill station for visit in Northern India. From Dehradhun the hill station is situated about 35 km and in the foothills of Garhwal Himalayan range. With various species of Flora and Fauna and its green hills, Mussoorie is the best hill resort. Snow falls in the month of December to February. It is located at an average altitude of 6,600 ft in Northern India. Doon Valley and the Shivalik Ranges are located to its south while in North east range of snowy peaks attracts the tourist alot. At present Mussoorie is considered as the most frequently visited tourist destination. Nearest places to visit from Mussoorie are:

  • Kempty Fall :  One of the  major landmarks in the town, which is situated 15 km from Mussoorie and is perfect place to chill out.
  • Mossy Fall : 7 km from Mussoorie and is surrounded by a dense forest.
  • Bhatta Fall :  7 km from Mussoorie and an ideal place for a picnic having different ponds.
  • Municiple Garden : 4 km from Mussoorie and a picnic spot having artificial mini lake with paddle boating facility.
  • Nag devta Temple : 6 km from Mussoorie and it is dedicated to snake of Lord Shiva.

History

Mussoorie is derived from the word "Mansoor" which is a  shrub. The Hill station of Mussoorie owes its credit to the British army officer named Captain Young. In the year of 1825, the military officer made up his mind to reside at this place because of the beauty of this hill station which impressed him alot. This is how the hill station of Mussoorie was founded. In the late 90's hills of Mussoorie was rich in Limestone and quarrying of limestone.The Hill Station is also famous for the gateway to Gangotri and yamunotri, the two most sacred places of Hindu.
