Rann of Kutch

The Rann of Kutch is the large area of salt marshes located in the Kutch district in Gujrat and on the southern tip of Sindh , Pakistan covering an area of 7,505.22 sq km in size and is one of the largest salt desert in the world. The name "Rann " comes from the Hindi word  ran meaning "Desert" and the hindi word is derived from the sanskrit word irina. It is divided into three parts :

  • Great Rann of Kutch
  • Little Rann of kutch
  • Banni Grasslands

The marsh covered the huge area and is positioned between the Gulf of Kutch and the mouth of Indus river in southern Pakistan. Luni River, which originates from Rajasthan lies in the northeast corner of Rann of Kutch. There are sandy islets of thorny scrub, forming a wildlife sanctuary. Different religions are found here which include : Hinduism, Sikhism, Jainism and Islam. An unexplained strange dancing light phenomena known locally as Chir Batti (ghost lights) occurs in Rann at nights.

Indo-Pakistan International Border

  • The Northern boundary of Rann of Kutch forms the International Border between India and Pakistan.
  • Pakistan has constructed Left Bank Outfall Drain (LBOD) project to bypass the saline and polluted water which is not fit for agriculture.
  • Rann of Kutch is joint water body of India and Pakistan.
  • Water released by the LBOD is enhancing the flooding and the quality of water bodies which are source of water to salt farms.
