Wagah Border, Amritsar

The Wagah border is a post between India and Pakistan. Wagah is the border that lies on the Grand Trunk Road between the cities of Amritsar in PunjabIndia and Lahore in PunjabPakistan. It is the only road border which crosses between India and Pakistan. The border is at a distance of 20 kms from Amritsar and 22 kms from Lahore. On the  only road link  between  the two neighbours.  Here the border is marked in white as it cuts across the historic Grand Trunk Road (GTR). The road has been closed for years now at Wagah by two metal gates,  one on each country’s side.  The two flag posts are located contiguous to the boundary line between the two gates. If you are visiting Amritsar, this place cannot be missed.

The evening parade and the ceremony at the wagah border leave your spirits soaring high as you witness the jawans of the indian border forces marching with full vigour and enthusiasm. The closing ceremony at Wagah Border, also known as 'lowering of the flags' ceremony is a daily military practice at the Wagah border. The Border Security Force and the Pakistan Rangers have jointly followed it since 1959. This interesting ceremony takes place every evening before sunset at the Wagah Border. Kids all dressed up perform on patriotic numbers such as Vande Mataram, Yeh Desh Hai Veer

Jawaanon Ka ,before flag lowering ceremony commences. The ‘Beating the Retreat’ ceremony starts with a stiff-marching parade by the soldiers from both the sides. The heavy gates at the Wagah Border are flung open; with two six-seven feet tall soldiers well dressed in their uniforms with colourful turbans, approach each other, exchange fierce looks, and show anger. The speciality of the ceremony is the extremely fast pace at which the soldiers walk, with their feet rising almost to their foreheads. They shake hands and begin to lower the Indian and Pakistani flags fixed on high poles at the gates, simultaneously. Absolutely high energy level drama every day. So many people come both sides to watch. The crowd on weekends is heavy and people watch it from the stands.
On Independence Day Celebrations , various programs like sword fighting and cultural dances exhibites by performers at Wagah Border.

The ceremony lasts for 45 minutes and is carried out before sunset. 4:15 pm is the time during winter and 4:45 during summer. The best time to visit the city of Amritsar is during the months of October to March, as the weather is cool and pleasant. Summers here are extremely hot and can be avoided for any outside visit like the Wagah Border.
