Rose Garden, Chandigarh

Rose Garden, is a botanical garden spread over 30 acres of land, with 50,000 rose-bushes of 1600 different species. It is located in Sector 16 of the city beautiful, Chandigarh, India. It is the largest rose garden in Asia. Along with the roses emphasis was also given on the trees of medicinal value and some unique specimen trees to enhance the beauty of the garden. The medicinal trees planted here are bel, bahera, harar, camphor and yellow gulmohar. The rose plans are planted in lawns and flower beds which are carved out beautifully. This garden is one of the top tourist attractions of the city with lakhs of tourists visiting it annually.
You can see fountains and lights near the main entrance area, there is a kids play area , lush green grass and benches where you can sit and relax and enjoy the beauty of this fantastic garden. You can just walk around and feel the aroma of each flower as you pass through. Rose Garden is well maintained with water fountains, canteen etc making it perfect spot of spending evening in Chandigarh.


The garden was established in the year 1967 under the guidance of the first chief commissioner and a Horticulturalist M.S Randhawa and has been named after India`s former President Dr. Zakir Hussain. This garden is the venue of the annual Festival of Gardens, an event listed on the national calendar of fairs and festivals. This is one of the main cultural events of the city and draws thousands of visitors. It was started in 1966. This garden has lots of flowers variety which is not available generally . It is the place were we can spend quality time with your friends, families. It is good for children too as they can get good play area. February is right time to visit with lots of fun to see varieties of flowers and cool climate to enjoy. Rose Festival

Apart from serving as a host of other events, the Zakir Rose Garden serves as the venue for hosting the annual Festival of Gardens, a major cultural event of the city during the month of February. The festival organised by the Tourism Department of Chandigarh Administration. Over 500 exotic varieties of roses are displayed in the three day long celebrations. Celebrated mainly as a tribute to the magnificence of the rose itself. The contests are open to the residents or institutions from nearby places. More than 20,000 people come to visit the Rose Garden during this period. Contests held during the Rose Festival are very popular with the audiences. Prizes are in the offing for Rose Prince and Rose Princess, Brass & Pipe Band, Photography, Gardening, Landscaping, and Bonsai. Local Artists land up at the Rose Garden from nearby areas and put up exhibitions. Flower Cutting and Flower arrangement contest are also organized between participants as well as the audience. Concerts, musical nights, comedy shows, 'antakshri' and food streets entertain the visitors held during this period.

How to Reach

The garden is easy to locate as it has multiple entrances. The main entrance has free parking facility, which can be reached from the Matka chowk side. Once you have reached Chandigarh. Getting a cab or Taxi from the airport, bus stand or railway station is not a difficult task as there are a lot of them who can take you there.

Shanti Kunj is another beautiful Garden located on the opposite side of the road where Rose Garden is located. Other than beautiful flowers, it also has a decorated Rain Drain and a neat walking path.
