Shillong "The Abode of Clouds", one of the smallest states in India is a capital and a hill station of Meghalaya situated at an average altitude of 5003 ft with highest Shillong Peak of height 6450 ft. Shillong city is in the center of the shillong plateau and is surrounded by the hills, three of them are : Lum Sohpetbneng, Lum Diengiei and Lum Shillong.
History
Shillong was named after the boy "Aahlad" who born to a virgin mother near the village Bisi. An uprising by the Khasis against foreign occupation of their land followed in the year 1829 and continued till January 1833. The British civil servant David Scott negotiated for the surrender of Khasi leader Tirot Sing who was taken to Dhaka for detention. A separate Chief Commissionership was formed with Shillong in the year 1874. On the formation of Assam as the Chief Commissioner's Province in the year 1874, Shillong was its capital until the creation of the new state of Meghalaya on 21 January 1972. When a proclamation was issued constituting Shillong and its suburbs within the Municipality was agreed to by Hain Manik Syiem of Mylliem under the agreement of 15 November 1878.
